In Western architecture, a lounge, also called a lounge room (Australian English), lounge (British English), sitting room (British English), or drawing room, is a room in a residential house or apartment for stress-free and socializing.
Such a room is usually known as a front room when it is close to the main entrance on the front of the house. In giant, formal properties, a sitting room is often a small personal living area adjoining to a bed room, such as the Queen’s Sitting Room and the Lincoln Sitting Room of the White House. After World War I the living room was the least used space in the house and was referred to as the demise room.
The term front room was coined in the late 19th or early 20th century by Edward Bok. It is now a time period used more often when referring to an area to chill out and unwind inside a family.
